My mother said she had aspirations, not to get married to an established man who could take care of her but support her aspirations. Today looking outside the window I see so many young women traversing the busy roads in a mundane city. They would get married oneday, their families would look for a handsome man with a well to do salary and position in a MNC or Public Sector. Would anything change in their lives? Tomorrow one lady would be less on this road and one day they will all become my mother. Little Alex had no idea of what I was talking about, he said,"Dad why does mother have to go out everyday when you take care of me?". I was smiling gazing at his curious face. I could only tell him that I did not want his mother to live like his grandmother. His next question was even more surprising, "Does she love you dad?". More than she loves you honey I replied with a laugh. We finished our juices and went to the park. Why not empower our lady's and let the groom find a comparative match in the society? Why find someone who can support her when she can support everyone? The questions boggled me the entire evening. She returned home and kissed me, I fell in love with her again.

By the duck pond

An old lady, pushing thirty
Everyday, by the duck pond
She never smiles,
She never cries
She barely moves once seated
She never talks to anybody
She just sits there,
Staring into space
In sunny days,
And in cloudy ones, too.
Once I tried to ask her
What was she doing here
And the only answer I got from her
Was, "I'm waiting."
And she never said anything more
I still see her in my rounds in the park
Sitting there melancholy
In her drab knee length dresses
But today, she's not there
Maybe she's found what she was waiting for
