आधी रात को दरवाजे की घंटी बज उठी।मन किसी अनहोनी की आशंका से कांप उठा। हिम्मत करके खिड़की के परदे की ओट से देखा। एक फटेहाल व्यक्ति सर्दी में कांप रहा था। मैंने उससे पूछा कि यहां क्यों खड़े हो। उसने कहा कि बहुत सर्दी है, कोई कंबल वगैरह दे दीजिए।
दिल और दिमाग में अंतर्द्वंद्व शुरू हो गया। दिल मदद करने को कह रहा था, मगर दिमाग अजनबी से सावधान रहने को कह रहा था। हिम्मत करके, मैंने एक पुराना कंबल निकाला और उससे कहा कि वह दरवाजे से दूर, मेरी नज़रों के सामने खड़ा हो जाए। मैं कंबल दरवाजे पर रख दूंगी। दरवाजा बंद होते ही तुम कंबल ले लेना। उसने वैसे ही किया। कंबल लेकर वह चला गया।
