Only more of them would do more harm than benefit. Who directs a conversation about growth and excess with them anyway? They're ignored, profligate kids wasted on resources available.
How I wash everything out that is in excess—excess soap, excess oil, excess sugar, excess grime, excess sweat, excess ennui, excess joy, excess love. I don't like anything in excess. It only grants access to an abscess of excess. Cease. Then, I want it to cease.
I rode horses years ago, trotting at a two-beat diagonal gait along the beachside with my Dad. I thought I'd get a chance to do it faster when I'd grow up, be an adult, ride all by myself. It never happened. Not the growth, I'm an adult surviving so far, but the riding. We left the riding lessons buried under the saddled girth years ago. And he took away the horses too. But the beach remains. The shores still sing a two-beat song of gallop. I think of my father often. Does my father think of me? I'm invariably bridled to his memories. And I'm riding away farther into the sea.
