My sitar and you arrived in my life around the same time. Last year, December. Similarities are uncanny.

To start with, you both have a long neck that I love to touch. Both like coconut oil (on strings or scalp). Both sound utterly mellow but have a propensity to go out of tune. There’s a need to tune (in) from time to time. Both sound sweeter and shriller as I go down, but whisper as I go up. To know both of you better, I need to travel far. My guru lives 40 kilometers away from home, in Kanakapura Road, takes two hours on bike. You live a thousand kilometers away in Delhi, takes two hours in the flight. Long distance becomes a pilgrimage, a test of commitment, a chance to know each other better. Both complete me.

It’s only fair I call the sitar with your name. I sleep with it every night and wake up to its melodious yawns. Makes me feel less alone. I hope when you visit, you don’t mind another you resting on my lap. I like you enough to not mind two of you.
