Chapter 1: Morning Rituals

"..Abhi naa jao chhod kar, ki dil abhi bhara nahi..", radio was somewhere adding sugar in her everyday boring morning tea.

Maira has this set routine. She would get up at 5, sometimes on her own and sometimes, those nightmares don't let her sleep. She is now habitual of it, maybe this is a part of her life now. She makes herself a cup of tea, grabs the newspaper, turns on the radio and sits in the balcony, she spend hours sitting there, talking to wind brushing against her hair.

She is 27, single. She left the hopes of getting married a long ago. But Indian parents, marrying her is their ultimate goal!

It was 9 am now. She runs a small school for poor children who want to study. She was waiting for her students to arrive.

"Maa, Maa, Dekho naa, ye fir chunni wheel me atak gyi! Nikal do na please!" Maira called her mom. The only setback in her life, her wheelchair! 15 years on same chair, people started calling her "Maira on Wheels"!

She felt broken and disgusted once, but now, she takes pride in it. She is still fighting for that incident, hoping no other Maira is born!

Chapter 2: Beliefs

Bad day today, one student withdrew his name from Maira's school, because she is a Muslim, his parents told him, "Musalman se mat padho! Wo aatankwad sikhayenge!". Little did they know, Maira's grandfather was a freedom fighter, and her father, who was a doctor, treated Hindu victims for free during the Hindu-Muslim riots.

Anyway, Maira didn't have time nor the energy to debate with them, she was pretty sure one day they will realize it themself.

Today Maira was bit distracted, first that withdrawal, then she was thinking what to say what to do, she was fighting her first case today and for herself. She didn't want to lack in anything there because, it was a long fight, and after so many years of patience, she wants a justification, for why a 12 year old was handed a "wheelchair"?

Chapter 3: Flashback

Maira was a sincere kid, regular to school, always obeyed everyone, helped her mom in her household chores, helped her brother in studies. She was a perfect daughter.

That day, she was having dinner. Her father was watching the news. News flash was all about burning of 3 train bogies filled with Hindu passengers and putting all the blame on Muslims. News of curfew in the Muslim colony was all over the news. Being a 12 year old and away from all the negative expects of society, Maira was playing with her brother but tension was easily visible on her parents' face.

"Doctor sahab, doctor sahab, mareez hu, madad kardo, bete ko talwar maari hai!" Someone was shouting at the door. Dr. Khan was afraid to open the door, but at the same time, he couldn't let a patient die. His oath taken as a Doctor was flashing in front of him.

Dr. Khan got up to open the door. As he opened the door, he was butchered with a sword. Little Maira saw her father's body fall down covered with blood.

market place as pure and genuine

like a dagger
brandished at the back.
