Broken Dreams

Lonely and broken, a boy made his way to the front gate. With tears in his eyes, he bid farewell to his parents. A fear-stricken heart coupled with shattered dreams had diminished his hopes of success. Slowly, the boy made his way to the hostel. A deserted road greeted him, reflecting his emotions, empty.
The infamous reputation of the campus had spread like wildfire. His friends, teachers and even his relatives had warned him about the extensive cases of ragging and drug abuses passed on through generations of young engineers. Though some people had supported his choice, a greater part of them had disdained his decision. Though the flames of negativity had its effects, a small part of his hope was left untouched.
The next four years will be tough. I have to survive. With this in mind, the broken warrior stepped into the J.C. Bose hall. The hall which integrated arrays of broken dreams.

ওরা শান্ত, ওরা চপল কিংবা দুষ্ট মিষ্ট
স্বল্প ভালোবাসা পেলে ওরা শান্ত শিষ্ট
ওরা আনমনা কখনো বা তোমায় মানবে না,
তবে বাৎসল্য পেলে ওরা তোমায় ভুলবে না,
ওদের মুখে দাদা ডাকটা শুনতে বেশ ভালো লাগে,
নিজের ভাই বোন ভেবেই, তাইতো ছুটি আগেভাগে।
ঠিক ততটাই সাহায্য করি যতটা মোদের আছে জানা,
লুকিয়ে আছে ওদের মধ্যে ভবিতব্যের অজানা,
ওরা সুরের প্রভাতী, করবে দেশমাতৃকার আরতি,
ওরাই দেশের মঙ্গল দীপের প্রজ্বলিত সেই জ্যোতি।।

কলেজের গেটের বাইরের পৃথিবীটা সমান্তরাল..
তুমি আর সুখ পাশাপাশি হেঁটে যাবে বহুদূর,
কিন্তু কেউ কাউকে স্পর্শ না করে...

In that distant land, I found a home. A family which was there not only to make you laugh until your stomach hurt but also to share your sorrow, and to make you your midnight coffee. Friends who woke you up just 5mins before class timing, and also gave proxy on days you wanted to stay in bed. Those long seminars were never a problem, as they would be there cracking some insane joke. Semesters didn't even seem long, as you knew someone was there to explain the entire subject in one night. A home where you argued over trivial issues, and still they would be beside you when you had a temperature rise. Several spoons in one plate of Maggie, a nice evening gossip in tea stalls, 2 plates of momo, and five mouths to eat, it might seem unhygienic, but that was the bond. Tour plans which never were executed, one sudden trip to Siliguri without reason, enjoying the sunset, and roaming in the market, late-night work in the auditorium, fest and festivals, despite the strict rules and imposition of wearing formal, we had our own cup of enjoyment.

ফেলে আসা রাতে ,কখনো চাই না হারাতে
আমাদের বিগত কলেজ জীবন
একমুঠো হাসি, সারাদিনের বদমাশি -প্রাণস্পন্দন
আজগুবি নাম রকমারি কাম
কারো দোষে কেউ বদনাম ,
খাবারের ভাগে কারো ছোঁ সবেগে
আবার কেউ কম পেয়ে রাগে
রাজদিঘি পাঁড়ে একসাথে ঘোরা
তামাশার ফোয়ারা আর মশকরা,
চা বাগান আর রুকরুকা নদী ঘেরা
আজও সেই স্বর্গরাজ্য আছে
নেই শুধু সেই পুরোনো ছেলের দল
যারা আজও স্মৃতি নিয়ে বাঁচে
সেই ঘরে ফেরার শেষ ট্রেন
চেনা হাতেদের ছাড়াছাড়ি, আবেগের বাড়াবাড়ি
সন্দিহান প্রতিশ্রুতি স্বীকার্য, দেখাহবে তাড়াতাড়ি
হয়তো কিছু গল্পের সমাপ্তি এভাবেই সমীচীন,
স্মৃতির রোমন্থনে দৃঢ় হয় বন্ধন প্রাচীন ।

আবার দেখা হবে, জানিনা কবে !! তবু দেখা হবে নিশ্চয় ।।

আমাদের কলেজের ভিতরেও একটা আমাজন আছে... যা আমাদের কলেজের প্রাণকেন্দ্র !
গাছ কাটতে কাটতে সেই সবুজে মোড়া ক্যাম্পাসটা কেমন প্রাণহীন ধূসর হয়ে যাচ্ছে দিনদিন !

আমরা কি দিন দিন জলপাইগুড়ির ঐতিহ্যবাহী এই কলেজটার " প্রকৌশলী কেন্দ্র " এর নামকরণ সার্থক করে তুলছি !

I went to JGEC like a wanderer in search of something to hold on to, but now I know that the beauty of this process is just because of these companions who had warmly welcomed me without even knowing me. Someday I hope to meet them again and complete my unfinished saga.

Wouldn't it be so much better if I had been enjoying my college days, instead of writing a nostalgic trip down memory lane!
When I went to JGEC, along with some luggage, I had a bag full of dreams. Those few common visions of enjoying college life.  And one among those was to prosper as an individual. In only a matter of a few days, a strong affection had grown in me for this faraway place. But what was that special entity which made me fall in love with that unknown town? Was it because of the scenic beauty, or my new schedule, or the freedom of living so far away from my hometown?
