between my birth year and now
i have flown from one name to another
carrying the essence and fragrance
of each name along with me

out of love, i was named love, Preeti
but people called me kali instead
for I was a dark chocolate flavoured kid
who was cooked for long in the furnace

perhaps, I was given milk baths
and rolled over powdered sugar
for I changed from bournville to milkybar
and begun to resemble my mother

i got admitted to school as Simmi
for my father wanted a different name for me
that made people often wonder
whether i was Hindu, Punjabi or Muslim

but definitely not a tamil name Simmi is
so when i got married my in laws
preferred to call me Preethi with a 'h' in it
but he calls me simmi and has accepted
my name as it is.

Hailstorm on a winter night
Nurses going crazier around midnight
Mother was handed over with her child
A name never to die, probably was a delight!

Distant chorus getting louder
Nicknames were processed before
Soon she entered into everyone's life
A name never to die, I guess, was a clean swipe!

The chosen one was to take the call
Source of joy was her happy face, when others sitting dull
She brightened up all with her smile
Aunt proposed her a name never to die, "Immortal"!

While
The unexplained apologies behind
The untold stories of the life with
The unbearable Pain in the heart
Are not unlocked
The unassertiveness
And the unrevealed feelings in the eyes
Are unhidden

The first part of her name does mean
'Beautiful'
And the next does represent
'The pond of paradise',
And together, she's meant
As the beautiful pond of Paradise.
She's grateful to the beloved souls
Who did name her so
With meaning, so deep and beautiful
Which she does will to denote;
Beautiful, both inside and out,
And she wishes that the Almighty
Grant her an opportunity
To spend a quality time,
In the pond of Paradise,
With His grace...

An unknown name in a land
where her parents held her in their hand
And whispered the name
for the pretty princess to become fame
There lays no story
but her writings made into history
She found the hidden writer
from a soul of achiever!

My art resembles you

You are the sunflowers and lilies of my garden,
You are the apple and mangoes of my orchard.
You are my syllabus which I complete on time without any burden,
You are my notes which I complete without being tortured.

You are the most type name of my keyboard,
You are the most common theme of my poetry.
It's never null always filled with scores, you are my scoreboard,
Love is a task to be done with ease, not in a hurry.

You are the only wallpaper and screensaver of my phone,
You are the ticking of my clock and beating of my heart which assures me I'm alive.
You are my rescue when I'm at mental cyclones,
You are my habitat in which I with ease, always survive.

You are my ink which I spill on papers and they carry your fragrance,
You are my colours from which I form art which resembles you in abundance.

The banyan tree has expanded into a park of itself.
Motorable roads have replaced the trails down the forest.
The car in our garage has replaced the motorbike in front of our house.
Radio has given way to smartphones
and emails to instant messaging.
Wrinkles have arrived on my mother's face and glasses on my father's.
Between my birth year and now,
socializing has given way to social distancing.
