We bring two Murakamis along with us to Munnar. Both short stories collections, with one story common in both the books. We handpick that to read together. In our separate books. Yours with sophisticated print, mine with ludicrously large fonts and pulpy paper. We recline against the wall, tubelight dazzling Murakami’s short story Birthday Girl.

Reading the same lines, different books, different interpretations. I enthusiastically call it the most romantic act ever. We end up racing. You naturally read fast. I, slow as a snail, hastily read to win. By the end of the story, you are four pages and two minutes ahead of me. I lose. When I finish and it comes my turn to dissect the story, I’m as clueless as a first-timer in escalator. I find out it’s not only the race to read it completely that I lost, but the race to get the crux of the story too. Romance turned into tragicomedy.

To save my face from turning into my ass, I plead for a new rule: From now on, reading races are only going to be conducted between us if I’m the writer. You have just one word response: loser.
