मैंने उस किताब के 15-20 पन्ने देखे थे, पढ़ने की कोशिश भी की थी पर हिंदी वो जो उधर लिखी थी कुछ साफ़ सी नहीं थी, वो कोई नई किताब तो थी नहीं उसकी हालत देख मुझे पक्का यकीन था कि वो जहां भी रखी थी छुपी हुई थी उसमें से सीलन की महक साफ आ रही थी। मैं इस बार 10-15 दिनों के लिए था उधर तो कोई जल्दी नहीं थी और वैसे भी मुझे उसे पढ़ने में कोई खास इंटरेस्ट नहीं था, मैं तो दाईं तरफ पर बने चित्र में खोया रहता था काफी देर-देर तक उधर बनी लड़की को महसूस करता रहता था और इसे ज्यादा मुझे तब कुछ मालूम भी नहीं था।

मगर फिर ये हर वक्त उस कमरे में रहना भी बहुत मुश्किल था। कोई ना कोई मुझे बुलाने आ ही जाता था। फिर कुछ दिनों में मै उस के बारे में जैसे भूल ही गया।

उपर किराएदार रहते थे, वो कुछ अरसे से साथ ही रुके हुए थे तो रिश्ते अच्छे थे। उनकी एक बेटी भी थी, नाम तो मालूम नहीं, घर पर सब ‘चांदनी’ ही बुलाते थे, वो हौस्टल में पढ़ती थी और मुझसे कुछ 2 साल बड़ी थी।
एक दिन ये मेघ बहुत तेजी से काफी देर तक बरसते रहे, उपर वाला एक कमरे में पानी भर गया वो कमरा चांदनी का था। तो नानी ने कहा,जब तक उधर पानी भरा हुआ है तब तक तुम नीचे वाले कमरे में रहलो, वो खाली है। मैं मूर्ख सा उधर खडा रहा, याद ही नहीं आया कि उस कमरे में ही तो वो किताब है रखी।
