Kiva no longer knew who to trust.

Her brother, her twin, who was utterly ruthless but loved her and would do anything for her?

Her husband and soulmate who held bitterness in his heart but who would walk through fire to save his loved ones?

Or herself? A woman who had taken the throne and ruled the kingdom with an iron fist but who wanted to make a difference in the world and yet had failed to do so.

Who had really betrayed her? Why was she now under threat of assassination? Because of her brother's enemies seeking revenge for his cruelty? Because of her husband's selfless heroism, seeking to destroy him? Or because of Kiva and the laws she implemented into the kingdom, to keep order in a time of chaos?

Phoenix fire erupted from the bird's wings as it sailed over the walls of the city.

"We have to do something or it will burn us all!" a woman named Vilona cried.

Moju crossed his arms. "No one can even come close to that thing."

"Except the prisoner." Moju wasn't sure who said it. One of the other nobles in the crowd but none wree brave enough to admit they suggested such a thing.

"He's been a menace! We can't possibly let him free!" Vilona shouted.

Moju agreed. But right now that... That prisoner and menace was their kingdom's only chance for survival.

Now all they had to do was convince him to help save them.

Jahad stared at his young nephew's flogged back. Blood dripped from the lash wounds as Kyren tried to dry himself off after washing.

So many times he had asked himself how his brother could be so cruel to his own son. Then again, his brother was the same man who had murdered their father.

Vaxon had never been the brother Jahad hoped and yet... He had foolishly hoped for years that his brother could be redeemed.

Even when he stole the throne and killed the king and his entire family, Jahad still hoped. But not now. Not with what he had planned for Kyren and the other Magi rebels.

Not since he had murdered their father. Vaxon was beyond saving. But perhaps Kyren and the other Magi were not.

Love is like fire. Nurture it and tend to it, the flames will grow brighter and stronger. But if you stomp on it and snuff it out, it will die.

Jaeka thought about those words...the words of a poem she had read back when she was a young girl.

Now, they seemed harsh and cruel. True... Hopelessly, painfully, achingly... True.

Jaeka blinked through the tears falling from her eyes as she met the eyes of her betrothed. "I don't understand..."

He sighed, rubbing his eyes. "Don't you get it? This arranged marriage is nothing more than a business transaction. I don't love you. Nor will I." With that, he stormed passed her, onto the streets of the upper part of town as if she had never mattered to him.

In that moment, she realized it was because she never really had mattered to him. She realized just how painfully true the poem was. Love was just like a fire. The instant it was stomped on and snuffed out...

It would die.
