Metrics on one side
inches on the other,
i was taught to measure and
construct with precision;

i still have the ruler
but could never really evaluate
how we grew apart,
staying together.

this is how distance works.
we could be together on my bike
and yet be miles from each other.
or we could be in different beds
and still manage to feel
each other's bones quake.

We come back to each other
every once in a while,
only to map how far
we have grown apart.
