Love smells like
all things freshly baked-
ginger bread,cinnamon rolls,
butter cookies and apple pie

Love smells like winter mornings,
early monsoons, honey pots, coffee cups,
old books, cold blankets
and warm kisses

I miss how
the jasmine plant back home
With its scented flowers never failed
to announce the arrival of dusk
before the shadows crept in.

I miss how
my closet back home
with its stacked clothes and
mild floral scent of her favorite detergent
whispered "mom's here" when opened.

All these new scents,
different people and their accents,
even the sky doesn't look the same here.
I wrap myself with the pashmina from home,
yearning for a whiff of familiarity!

It's mom
and her bribe
to get me open my eyes.
Quite cruel of her
to do so on a sunday morning.
Ah..an aroma so divine,
It could only be coffee!
I raise my morning cup of sunshine
and my sweet anger melts
when the liquid warmth
caresses by lips.
But of course,
I go back to glare at her
once I'm done with my coffee kiss.

At the mall today
a random stranger
left behind a familiar sillage
of your brand of cologne.
I let the woody fragrance engulf me
Stopping in my tracks.

I'll move away from it
As quick as my
now woodened legs loosen,
I will run away.
From the memories and the man
that scent is waking up in me.

But even as I prepare my flight
my inner self fights.
Begging me to take just...
Just one another deep breathe!

the candle has to burn.
For the ground to quench
the clouds have to cry.
Seems like life
is a deal dealt unfair.
For,anything to rise up and shine,
here something else has to churn down!
