The Constant Gardener - Movie Review

Yesterday, I sat quite comfortably with my cousins (being a Saturday ofcourse) to watch this difficult yet overwhelmingly gritty film called "The Constant Gardener" starring Ralph Fiennes (he also plays The Voldemort, whose very name can awaken the Harry Potter extremist in some), Rachel Weiss (the damsel from The Mummy franchise) in prominent roles. The film is available on Netflix and according to me is way far from the commercial hollywood genre, that I think it is not popularized enough. The experience of watching this film was equivalent to watching a documentary, the only difference was that people weren't talking directly in front of the camera in a conscious manner.β€” % &(Continued...)

The movie, based on real incidents, focusses around a political/medical conspiracy around drug trials and the numerous African lives which were put at stake. Problem ensues when the female protagonist (Rachel Weiss) tries to expose the deranged motive of the pharma company, getting herself murdered gruesomely. The aftermath of her gory death and the trauma that her husband undergoes to bring the wrongdoings of the blood-sucking business and political mafia forms the plot. The movie expectedly follows the nonlinear fashion of both storytelling and filmmaking.

The film showcases the plight of African natives in the most pathetic and anguishing way possible, under the vicinity of dry and poverty-stricken landscapes of Western Africa, such that it is worse than how they portrayed Indians in the "Slumdog Millionaire". It also highlights on how the first world countries mercilessly exploiting underdeveloped and previously colonized countries is prevalent, emphasising on the never-ending implication of a certain level of imperialism and white supremacy. I have to say that the cast is absolutely stellar. β€” % &(Continued...)

Rachel Weiss as Tessa, the liberal empathetic social worker is absolutely beautiful and charms her way throughout our heart. Ralph Fiennes kicks it out of the park as Justin, the British diplomat, who has lost the love of his life. He emotes pretty brilliantly, especially during the scene where he hears for the first time that his wife is killed. The supporting cast including Danny Huston as Sandy, the scorned one-sided lover who eventually causes Tessa's death; Hubert Kounde as Dr Arnold Bluhm, Tessa's gay accomplice who becomes the victim in the blasphemous killing along with Tessa; and Bill Nighy as Bernard Peregrine as the vile corporate shark, who devises the plan for murder, all of them play subtle yet powerful parts in this 2 hours 9 minutes crime drama. The cinematography is full of variety and distinctiveness zooming in and zooming out at unexpected moments. The direction was peculiar, it provided kind of a rarely seen presentation. β€” % &(Continued...)

Overall, the movie cannot be an easy watch for faint-hearted individuals in my opinion. For the ones, who are looking for critically acclaimed genres, this is the winner. Look out for a free weekday/weekend and a pleasant mood to watch this piece. Ciao, I tell myself to write more. Let this one bring me closer to it.β€” % &
