रात भर रोशनी देने वाला चिराग भी सूर्योदय होती ही निरर्थक और अनुपयोगी हो जाता है। यह जीवन के सार्वभौमिक "उपयोगिता के सिद्धांत" को दर्शाता है कि जीवन में किसी भी व्यक्ति, वस्तु, स्थान या पद का मूल्य उसकी उपयोगितानुसार समय निर्धारित करता है। यानी, कीमत आपकी नही समय की है, जैसा आपका समय वैसी आपकी कीमत। अतः समय की रेत पर हम सब अस्थायी, मूल्यहीन, नश्वर और नगण्य है।
