When the invasion came, it was invisible.
Mounting casualties were the only sign.
Politicians warned of deadly transmissions.
Friends and neighbors under suspicion— anyone could be an enemy collaborator!
Conspiracy theory contagion.
Homemade masks as haute couture.
The daily grind slowly ground to a halt.
Each day blurred indistinctly into the next.
Survival solidarity; united in our isolation.
Quarantined, with only fears of company, we peered outside through digital windows.
Suffering translated into sterile statistics; infection rates and forecasted fatalities.
We were all trapped in same nightmare, wanting desperately to wake.

LONG DISTANCE
Damn these many miles between us. How can my heart feel so close to yours, while our bodies remain far apart? Why must happiness and sorrow be entangled with one another?
I bless the day I met you, and curse the circumstances which conspire to separate us. I'll gladly drink the bitter along with sweetness though, if that is the price of knowing you.
