DANCE OF THE HEROES

"Advance!"
A voice cuts across the field,
Then dies with the deafening roar
Of artillery shells landing,
Mortar bombs pounding,
Machine guns rattling —
It is the dance of the heroes.

One falls. Two fall.
Yet on and on they move
Over their fallen comrades,
Whom they'll mourn later,
For in the meantime,
They must pay all attention
To the dance of the heroes.

Fire eventually ceases
Coming from the enemy side.
They overrun the enemy,
Clear up the operation theater,
And pick up their fallen comrades,
For the dance is over —
The dance of the heroes.
