ছোটবেলায় কম-বেশি সবার একটাই প্রশ্ন থাকে— "কবে বড়ো হবো!" কিন্তু বড়ো হয়ে "কী হবো?"
কিংবা "কী করবো?"— সেটা মাথায় কাজ করে না। নাইন-টু-ফাইভ চাকরি তখন দু-চোখের এক এবং একমাত্র স্বপ্ন হয়ে দাঁড়ায়। ছুটতে থাকি আমরা নিজেদের প্রতিষ্ঠিত করার দৌড়ে, স্বাধীনতার দৌড়ে। স্কুলের নিয়ম, পড়াশোনার পাহাড়, মা-বাবার বকুনি— সবকিছু থেকে মুক্তি পাওয়ার জন্য এটাই একমাত্র উপায় বলে মনে হয় তখন। অথচ এসবের মাঝে আমরা ভুলেই যাই যে, আমরা যেমন বড়ো হচ্ছি, তেমনই আমাদের কাছের মানুষগুলোর চেহারায় বার্ধক্যের ছাপ পড়ছে। নিজেদের কর্মব্যস্ততার অজুহাতে তাদের সাথে নিয়ম রক্ষার মতো কথা হয়, দেখা হয় মাঝে সাজে। তারপর হঠাৎ কোনো এক রোজকার দিনে তারা আমাদের ছেড়ে পাড়ি দেয় না ফেরার দেশে। আর কখনো ফেরে না। ডাকে না আমাদের নাম ধরে। ডাকে না আমাদের আগের মতো। ডাকে না আমাদের ভালোবাসার সুরে। ডাকে না, কারণ সে আর ডাকার জন্য নেই...

তাদের সাথে হওয়া শেষ কথাগুলো কানে বাজে, প্রিয় মুহূর্তগুলো চোখের সামনে ভিড় করে আসে। যে মানুষটাকে আমরা কোনো দিন চুপ করে এক মুহূর্ত বসতে দেখিনি, সে হঠাৎই চুপচাপ শুয়ে থাকে— ফুলের সাজে। আর কখনো ওঠে না। তখন তাঁকে উদ্দেশ্য করে কত মানুষের ভিড়, নিয়মিত যাতায়াত— তবুও চারপাশ কেমন খালি খালি লাগে। তার বসার বেঞ্চ, বিছানা, কাজের জায়গা— সব ফাঁকা।
সে নেই।
