We're only mean to the people we're not afraid to lose.

We're only mean to the people we're not afraid to lose. The one's who can't and won't leave us. So we just push, and push, and push, until the whole thing goes sideways.

"Prove you're Krysathia." I told her.
"You're wearing purple panties. You changed in front of me this morning."
I blushed florid. "That is correct."-
I couldn't breathe.
"You're a fairy."
"No."
"Krysathia, my daughter, is actually Marlene. She belongs to us."
"No."
-
Willina gnashed her teeth. "You are messing with powers far beyond you. You're messing with 'the fae'. Are you so stupid you haven't read the old stories?"
"I am fae."-
“Marlene, fairies ain't real. They can't and won't take you!"

A right turn the right way led into town. A left turn the wrong way led into the prairie with a million rotting houses and barns. Proof of humanity's tenacity and proof the west can never be tamed.

I wrote a note. "Krysathia, meet me tonight. We need to make a plan."
I got a note back that evening. "When and where?"
Well, I was standing right there! So I tapped on the window. I saw a form in the bed. I thought it was Krysathia. But it wasn't.-
"I can't explain now, Krysathia, but I'll come for you soon. I'll rescue you."
And before I could open my mouth to say "Ma'am, I'm not entirely happy with where I'm at but I certainly don't need saving!" There was the popping sound again. And she was gone. Into the ether.-
