I met a friend today. She related how she wanted to search for a paragraph from an Adichie novel that she'd read before but didn't quite remember how it was worded. All she remembered was how it had made her feel. Hollow, evacuated from within, sucked of hope. The aftertaste stayed with her even though the words didn't.

After a day-long scrounging through whatever she could find of Adichie, she gave up. The paragraph didn't magically appear. Tired, she went to bed and soon was sunk deep into sleep. The words that had her spent by the end of the day appeared in her dreams. Text penned in fountain ink. Prussian blue in colour. The paper soft and furry that didn't let the ink spread beyond its territory. It was beautiful and it made her feel the same way. In her sleep. All over again.

I didn't ask my friend for those words. Even if I had, they won't have stayed. The feelings triggered by them would have. You know, those feelings have somehow stayed. Hollow, evacuated from within, sucked of hope, that's how I feel nowadays. Maybe Adichie wrote about me.
