SHANE WARNE : A SPINNER IN A WORLD OF PACE

Test Cricket, unlike other sports, is a game of multilayered narrative. It's less a sport & more a novel being written over 5 days of sine waves. Exactly why the greats of the format attain mythical hero status - their wins & losses metaphors of human condition. Among this pantheon of heros, Shane Warne was the most unusual one. That's why I wrote the title "A spinner in a world of pace". He didn't behave like a part of the drama. He ran his own indie play centrestage while others recited mugged up lines of an epic. He made 'free will' look possible, even easy. In personal life, he had many failings. A mix of ego, entitlement, and masculine toxicity perhaps, going by the reported cases. But on field, he made even his failures look inspiring. He played like there's
not enough time. Quickly running back with
the next delivery. In the end, he completed
one last step towards becoming a mythical
figure. He departed before his time, he
departed quickly. He gave us a hell of a story
to narrate. We can say we lived through a
time when Shane Warne used to bowl in 5-day
matches of a strange game.
