Freedom won, yet chains remain in view,
Post-colonial dreams shattered by the few.
Happy Independence Day, they chant and cheer,
But corruption spreads year after year.
The leaders feast, the people starve,
Promises fade, the future carved.
Happy Independence Day, they cry aloud,
Yet justice hides beneath the shroud.
The rule of law, a fleeting jest,
While power tramples on the rest.
Happy Independence Day, they sing with glee,
But lives are crushed, no liberty.
Protesters fall with hopes unmet,
As silence echoes our regret.
Happy Independence Day, they raise the flag,
But human life is just a tag.
For asking change, the streets run red,
As dreams are silenced, voices dead.
Happy Independence Day, the anthem’s call,
But who will mourn the ones who fall?
The barest minimum we seek in vain,
Yet all we're given is more pain.-
My heart is but a cemetery,
where buried emotions rest,
each marked uniquely,
testifying to their once vibrant existence.
They bear witness to their past lives,
memories shared, and dream unfulfilled.-
