Black Bart Roberts
Born Bartholomew Roberts undoubtedly the greatest pirate from Wales
Scourge of the Atlantic Sea lanes, fear filled his sails
Originally an honest sailor who sailed the seven seas
After being captured by Howell Davis he turned to piracy
In two short years as a freebooter with five hundred ships to his name
He realised his destiny and grew stature in his fame
In 1727 after a raid in the Atlantic lane, the Navy ship the Swallow proved to be Black Bart's bane
The Swallow chased Black Bart's ship and ran the hulk to ground
He met his end with a shot in the neck, with a grapeshot and single round.
His loyal crew on seeing this and wanting Bart's body to be free
Wrapped the Captain in weighted sail cloth and cast him into the sea
With the death of Black Bart Roberts, piracy came to an end
But the legacy left by the Welsh pirates is a history we all should defend
