"go away, let go!"
he shouts at her.
"fine, i'll leave you!"
she shouts,
right back at him.

she leaves him;
goes back home;
cries by herself;
and hates him,
for the rest of her life.

he found out
that he had cancer.
he dies--
two weeks,
after their fight.

i let my crazy thoughts go astray.
to find the words laid a-floating
in the balmy air of the evening.

as i let my mind fly away,
i notice the familiar northerly way.
it goes to him, whichever way.

as i hold my pen to write,
i know who comes to light.
only him again in sight.

whatever i do to banish him,
i know i'll never really win.
all pretensions fade within.

although i write of many themes,
most of them refer to him.
it shall always be about him.

you cry because you lost her.
she cries because you allowed it to happen.

you think he's cold and cruel,
because he ignored you
when you spoke.
you alluded his attitude
to an arrogance within him;
but what, you failed to find out,
was the fact that when you tried
to draw him out,
he lost someone that day;
he was aching--
he was trying to contain the pain.

you had him at his best;
and, left him when he was less.

she had him at his worst;
and, waited for him to be better--
even better than he ever was.

"make a promise..." she tells him.

"what about?" he asks.

"promise me that whatever happens to us, you will be strong. if we ever fight, if i die, or if you ever lose me, assure me that you'll be fine--that you'll continue to live," she enunciates.

"...sure," he tells her, noncommitally.

"not like that. make a serious promise!" she demands.

"okay, okay. yes, i promise!" he exclaims, just to keep the peace.

a few months after that conversation, he finds it difficult to breathe. he remembers that promise; for the girl, he loved, just died--and, he promised to live for her. so, in order to appease her, he endeavors to stay alive--even when he wants to kill himself--just to keep the peace.

"you're the one i want," he says.
"that's not enough reason," i say.

he makes her heart pound with tumultuous noise,
infused with a longing to touch his face.
she died with a photo of him in her hand.

i find out that i love me too.
