In attempts to keep
my dearest things safe,
I hide them
very carefully
and forget.
Keys, dry flowers,
letters, earrings,
tickets I've travelled on,
love.
Often I find them
lying around
in folds of sweaters,
under pillows, in food cans,
in old books,
in hearts.
Often I find them
when they are
not needed anymore.

Christmas and the New Year were round the corner. We had a lot of things to do. We were out shopping for Secret Santa gifts and decorations for our home. The shopping was exhausting, so we had our lunch at the food court itself. After we returned, I asked him for house keys. He realized he didn't have it. I panicked. We checked everywhere and it wasn't there. What do we do? An argument began where both of us started accusing each other. I was even more upset because it had my favourite keychain. Eventually, a key maker was called and a new set was made. At night, when I was clearing my tote, I found the keys in a tiny middle pocket. I was embarrassed. I went to show him, ready to be reduced to ashes by his anger. Instead, he made me sit next to him and gave me a present. "I wanted to give you this on X'mas." I excitedly opened. It was a jigsaw puzzle keychain. "One half for you and another for me, just to remind you that our pieces fit each other perfectly." I knew that's the reason I belonged to him.

I came back today from shopping for the Secret Santa.
I opened the door with the keys and saw a half of the keychain.
My heartfelt half empty. Because he had the other half with him.
